Why rent receipts

If you are a salaried renter claiming the HRA exemption, your employer typically asks for rent receipts at proof submission — one per month of rent paid. Each receipt needs the tenant and landlord names, the amount, the period, and the premises. This tool produces that set in one go.

  • Do I need my landlord's PAN?

If the rent you pay crosses ₹1,00,000 in a financial year, yes — your employer needs the landlord's PAN to process the exemption. Below that, receipts alone usually suffice.

  • Are digital rent receipts valid?

There is no rule that a receipt must be handwritten. What matters is the details and the landlord's signature — print these or save them as PDF and have them signed. If you pay rent in cash above ₹5,000 a month, receipts are traditionally expected to carry a revenue stamp.

  • How many months of receipts do I need?

One for every month you are claiming — usually the full financial year. Keep every month's receipt; a missing month can shrink your exemption.
